This section includes an overview of the background and shows:
- distribution of disposable income,
- how different client groups (children, working-age adults and pensioners) are distributed across income quintiles,
- the percentage of each client group below various fractions of mean and median income,
- the composition by client group of the total number of people below these thresholds, and
- income mobility and persistence of low income.
Supplementary tables
This section focuses on changes over time in:
- decile shares of total disposable income,
- numbers and percentages of groups with income below various fractions of contemporary mean or median income,
- median income by quintile for a range of groups, and
- numbers and percentages of groups with income below various fractions of base-year mean or median income.
The supplementary tables generally show time series from 1994/5 to 2002/03 with estimates based on data from the Family Resources Survey. However, the tables in section H cover a longer time period (1979 to 2002/3) with results for earlier years drawn from the Family Expenditure Survey (FES).
