15 January 2004 - Appointment of Mrs Brigid Campbell to the Social Security Advisory Committee (SSAC)
The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Andrew Smith, has appointed Mrs Brigid Campbell as a member of the SSAC for three years from 1 February 2004.
Brigid Campbell studied Classics at Hull and Oxford, before entering the Department of Health and Social Security as an administration trainee, working mainly with expert advisory committees in the medical field. She subsequently underwent teacher training, spent 5 years in a Citizens Advice Bureau, and went on to study law and qualify as a solicitor.
After a short spell in practice she joined the teaching staff of The College of Law and became the College’s Head of Welfare Law, co-authoring the student textbook used for the Legal Practice course. She was appointed to the Independent Tribunal Service (now The Appeals Service) in 1995, and sits as a part-time legally-qualified panel member, with particular experience in disability and incapacity appeals.
Since retiring from the College of Law in 2000 she has retrained in voluntary advice work with Citizens Advice, and is education consultant to The College of Law’s Legal Network Television service for its welfare law programmes. She has been actively involved as a trustee and committee member of a small local arts charity for several years.
Welcoming the appointment, the Chairman of the SSAC Sir Thomas Boyd-Carpenter KBE said “I am delighted that Brigid Campbell has joined the Committee. Her knowledge and expertise will be of great value to the Committee in its work.
