13 July 2004 - Bill Callaghan to continue HSC role

The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Andrew Smith announced today the reappointment of Bill Callaghan as Chair of the Health and Safety Commission.

Mr Callaghan has held the position since October 1999 and the reappointment is for a further three years. Prior to taking on his HSC role he was the Chief Economist and Head of the Economic and Social Affairs Department at the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

Over the past five years Mr Callaghan has taken forward the Revitalising Health and Safety agenda and has strengthened the Commission’s strategic capacity. This culminated in the publication of the HSC’s “Strategy for workplace health and safety in Great Britain to 2010 and beyond”.

The delivery of this strategy is his top priority, working in partnership with HSC and the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) stakeholders to improve health and safety at work.

Mr Smith said: “Bill is an excellent chair of the Commission and has led it through an important period of change. His reappointment will help ensure that Britain continues to lead the world in workplace health and safety.”

Mr Callaghan has also had considerable experience of working with different groups in industry and public life and has served on the boards of Business in the Community and the Basic Skills Agency.

He served on the Low Pay Commission from 1997 - 2000 and was a member of the Economic and Social Research Council’s Research Priorities Board. He is a member of the DTI’s Fair Markets Board and is a Visiting Fellow of Nuffield College.
