28 October 2004 - Alan Johnson appoints new chairman for the Department for Work and Pensions Social Security Advisory Committee (SSAC)

Alan Johnson, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, announced today that Sir Richard Tilt has agreed to serve as Chairman of the Social Security Advisory Committee. His appointment will be for three years.

He will succeed Sir Thomas Boyd-Carpenter KBE, who retires in December. Mr Johnson said: “I am very pleased that Sir Richard has agreed to chair the Committee. I am also extremely grateful to Sir Thomas for all that he has achieved in his nine years as Chair.”

Sir Richard, who is 60, is currently the Social Fund Commissioner and Chair of Leicestershire, Northants and Rutland Strategic Health Authority. He was formerly Director-General of the Prison Service.

Notes for editors

  1. The SSAC is the main UK advisory body for all social security matters except those relating to industrial injuries, war pensions, occupational pensions, and National Insurance contributions. It has fourteen members, including the Chairman, each of whom is appointed by the Secretary of State for a term of three years.
  2. Appointments to the SSAC are regulated by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments (OCPA) and each is overseen by an independent assessor approved by OCPA.
