19 July 2005 - DRC Annual Report Published Today

The annual report and accounts of the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) were published today.

Minister for Disabled People Anne McGuire said:

“The DRC does vital work as an advocate for millions of disabled people. In its fifth year it has helped disabled people and those with duties under the DDA to recognise their new rights and responsibilities and assisted the Government to shape legislation.

‘’Through its information and advice service which helps thousands of people, drafting codes of practice and supporting disabled people in enforcing their rights, the DRC is a major force in ensuring legislation delivers in reality."

Notes to editors

  1. The Annual Report is presented to Parliament by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions pursuant to para.16(3) of Schedule 1, and the Accounts presented to Parliament by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions on behalf of the Comptroller and Auditor General , pursuant to para.15(2) of Schedule 1 to the Disability Rights Commission Act 1999.
  2. Copies of the report can be purchased from the Stationery Office on 0870 600 5522.
  3. The DRC was established by the Disability Rights Commission Act 1999 to work towards the elimination of discrimination against disabled people; promote equal opportunities; encourage good practice and keep the working of the Disability Discrimination Act and the DRC Act under review. The Commission opened for business in April 2000.
  4. The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 2005 reached the statute book in April 2005 and extends the DDA 1995. For more information go to www.dwp.gov.uk/mediacentre/pressreleases/2005/apr/dda_royal_assent.asp
  5. Under the DDA 1995, from 1 October 2004, anyone providing a service to the public has needed to tackle physical barriers to disabled people accessing their services. In addition, for the first time, small employers had the same duties towards disabled staff as larger firms. This means not discriminating against employees or potential employees on grounds of disability and making reasonable adjustments for them.
