Northern Ireland Executive: New Targeting Social Need

In November 2006 Lifetime Opportunities was launched as the Government's new Anti-Poverty and Social Inclusion Strategy for Northern Ireland.

Lifetime Opportunitiesand its associated targets however have still to be formally considered by the restored Northern Ireland Executive. The Executive is required by Section 16 of the Northern Ireland St Andrews Agreement Act 2006 to adopt a strategy to tackle poverty and social exclusion and patterns of deprivation, based on objective need. The Lifetime Opportunities document can be viewed at the central anti-poverty website.

Measuring child poverty

In April 2002 we launched our consultation Measuring child poverty PDF to seek views on the best way to measure child poverty in the long term. Preliminary conclusions PDF were published in May 2003, and Final conclusions PDF were published in December 2003.

Opportunity Age

Opportunity Age is the Government's strategy for an ageing society. The strategy aims to end the perception of older people as dependent; ensure that longer life is healthy and fulfilling; and that older people are full participants in society. It was first published in ‘Opportunity Age: Meeting the challenges of ageing in the 21st century’ in March 2005.

Health inequalities team

The Health Inequalities Unit is a small team in the Department of Health with a cross government focus.

Fuel poverty indicators

The Government produces annual reports of progress towards meeting the targets set out in the UK Fuel Poverty Strategy. The reports provide updates on actions since the publication of the UK Fuel Poverty Strategy in November 2001 and highlight some key areas for attention during the coming year.
