Full of Life

People are living longer. By 2020, half the population of the UK will be aged 50 and over. This brings fundamental changes to the nature of society and the Government wants to ensure we adapt successfully to these changes.
This is a long-term challenge which will need the support of everyone.
Under the Full of Life banner, the Government and other supporting groups are undertaking a wide programme of activity to raise the profile of the issues surrounding older people and our ageing society. UK Older People’s Day has been a key focus for 2008.
UK Older People’s Day 2008
UK Older People’s Day took place on 1 October 2008. The main aims for the day were to:
- celebrate the huge contribution older people make to our society and economy
- create a positive view of later life and tackle outdated stereotypes
- raise awareness of the opportunities and entitlements for older people across society
- ensure older people don’t feel excluded or isolated from the rest of society.
Get involved
Celebrating UK Older People’s Day was a great opportunity to bring your community together and build new relationships with people of all ages. There will be events across the country and we encourage you to get involved.
To get started, we developed the Full of ideas toolkit which includes a selection of ‘ready made’ event ideas, based on this year’s theme of bringing generations together to promote greater understanding and respect. There are also a host of additional resources that were developed to help celebrate the lives of older people and reach across the generations to encourage young and old to live and learn together.
These have been designed to help plan events from start to finish!
